Long Beach
City Councilwoman Tonia Reyes Uranga becomes the SCAQMD Governing Board
representative for the newly constituted 51-city L.A. County Western Region,
as called for under SB 886 (Negrete-McLeod). Councilwoman Reyes Uranga
was previously elected in June 2006 by the
City Selection Committee to represent the 61 cities of then L.A. Eastern
Region.
Councilwoman Reyes Uranga was first elected to represent the Seventh
District on the Long Beach City Council in June 2002 and reelected in April
2006. Tonia is proud to represent the most diverse council district in
the most diverse city in the nation.
Councilwoman Reyes Uranga is Chair of the Long Beach City Council's I-710
Oversight Committee and the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
As Chair of the City's two primary committees responsible for managing
growth, Tonia Reyes Uranga has led efforts to balance the growth at the Port
of Long Beach and the City's airport with the need to preserve the quality
of life in our neighborhoods, protect the environment and improve air
quality throughout the region.
In addition to serving on the League of California Cities Environmental
Policy Board and the Board of the League's Latino Caucus, Tonia maintains a
leadership role with the National League of Cities as the Hispanic Elected
Local Officials' representative to the Education Task Force. In
addition, she serves on Southern California Association of Governments'
Transportation & Goods Movement Committee and the County Sanitation
Districts of Los Angeles County.
Tonia remains active in the community by volunteering her time with
community-based organizations and serves on the Board of Directors of the
St. Mary's Medical Center Board of Trustees. She is an Inaugural class
participant and Alumna of Leadership Long Beach and Leadership California
and Board Member Emeritus of the Westside Long Beach Youth Foundation.
Tonia's recognitions include the Leadership California Community Leader
Award, the NAACP Humanitarian Award and the LAMBDA Human Rights Award and
the Community Service Award from the State LULAC to name a few.
Tonia Reyes Uranga studied history at the University of California at Los
Angeles (UCLA) and is a 40-year resident of Long Beach. Tonia and Roberto Uranga, a
member of the Long Beach Community College District Board of Trustees, are
parents of three college students: Rosalinda, Emiliano and Roberto Tomas.
