Anupom "Pom
Pom" Ganguli, Ph.D. was appointed in January 2006 to the position of
Assistant Deputy Executive Officer for Public Affairs. Since May 2002 he
has also been the agency's Public Advisor, a function that he continues.
Pom Pom is responsible for keeping open lines of communication and
coordination with the public, elected officials at all levels, the
business community, as well as local residents. His office is
responsible for environmental justice, outreach and education,
legislations, small business assistance, and other programs.
The Public
Advisor’s office provides administrative assistance, technical services,
and information to both small businesses and the public. He and his
staff also facilitate the business community’s and public’s
participation in AQMD programs and regulatory activities.
Pom Pom
worked as a research engineer in process equipment research and
development for about nine years prior to joining the AQMD team in 1987
and was promoted to the Planning Manager position in 1990. He developed
key rules, regulations, and policies until 1999, and also managed
compliance activities for the refinery team. He was a principal
architect of the landmark RECLAIM cap and trade program – the world’s
first wide-scale emissions trading regulatory program. From 1999 to
2002, Pom Pom served as the manager responsible for technology
demonstration programs in the Technology Advancement Office.
His
multifaceted experiences in rulemaking, policy development, planning,
engineering and compliance, technology advancement, community and
business outreach, and environmental justice areas have given him a
well-rounded and comprehensive overview of both district functions and
the region’s need to bring healthful air to the residents of Southern
California.
He holds a
Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Northwestern University (Illinois,
1979), a master’s degree from the University of Windsor (Canada, 1976),
and a bachelor’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (India,
1975). He is also a recent graduate of the Southern California
Leadership Program.
Pom Pom lives
in Arcadia with his wife and two daughters. He enjoys traveling and
reading philosophical and spiritual material in his spare time.
