Technical consultations are one of the many ways AQMD helps
businesses meet today’s air quality standards. AQMD’s Small Business
Assistance Office offers free technical consultation service either on-site, by
phone, or at AQMD headquarters to help business owners:
- Determine if equipment, process(es) and/or operations require
permitting and/or registration, or is exempt from regulation.
- Assist with understanding permit conditions and rule requirements.
- Provide business operators with compliance determination by
identifying areas of non-compliance.
- Assist business operators in developing strategies to achieve compliance
with AQMD rules and regulations.
- Assist business operators with proper recordkeeping necessary to
comply with permit conditions.
- Provide assistance and liaison with other agency staff
on permit processing, application filing, regulatory
compliance, and fee issues.
All businesses with 100 or fewer employees or with annual gross revenues
up to $5 million are eligible for this free
on-site, and over-the-counter, or phone technical consultation service.

What to expect when help arrives
Your Small Business Representative will review AQMD rules and regulations
which apply to your facility. During a walk-through of your facility, you
and your AQMD representative will identify problem areas, evaluate pollution
reduction responsibilities, and work together to find permanent, effective
solutions. If something needs to be corrected, no tickets or fines will be
issued, but you must agree in advance to correct the violations as quickly
as possible. We generally allow two weeks to comply, and will also help you with your
request for a variance from our Hearing Board if it will take more time.
Follow-up
Be sure to call your Small Business representative if you need additional help. He
or she may also check with you from time to time to see if you need further
compliance assistance. Ultimately, you are responsible for correcting any
non-compliant conditions.
