Asthma Impacts of Air Pollution
Conference
February 17, 2006
Asthma has reached epidemic proportions in the United States, with an
estimated 20 million Americans suffering from it. National asthma impacts
include an estimated 5,000 deaths annually; over 14 million lost school
days, and more than $16.1 billion in healthcare expenses and lost
productivity. In California, approximately 2-1⁄2 million people are
diagnosed with asthma – 500,000 of them are children.
The South Coast Air
Quality Management District (AQMD) Asthma Conference, in what is expected to
become an annual event, will bring together experts from health care, the
public & private sectors, and environmental and community-based organizations to
explore solutions to our asthma and air pollution challenges.
This event will:
- Look at the role of air pollution and explore asthma causes/management
- Highlight a world-renowned study on asthma and children’s health
- Propose recommendations for policy and research to address prevention
and management of asthma symptoms
- Hear inspiring stories from asthma sufferers who have achieved success
in the face of adversity.
Your participation is vital in the efforts to realize the health benefits
of reducing regional air pollution levels, especially for our children and
their future.
