The South Coast Air Quality Management District and its co-sponsors invite you to attend the Asthma Is a Small World, International Conference on the Asthma Impacts of Air Pollution, which will be held Thursday - Friday, April 26 - 27, 2007, in Anaheim, California, USA.

Internationally recognized scientists, physicians, public health professionals, political and policy individuals from countries around the world are invited to participate to address accelerating policy and technology solutions to improve the conditions of the air that we breathe, and reduce the alarming increase in the incidence of asthma. The conference will feature sessions on the Health Effects of Air Pollution; Heath Tracking and Management Guidelines; Legislative and Policy Approaches; and Current Concepts in Asthma and Respiratory Diseases.  The general conference program will begin Thursday morning with a keynote presentation on the Asthma and Air Pollution problems.

Other conference highlights include esteemed researchers, scientists, community-organization leaders and policy makers exploring the health effects of traffic emissions, pollution exposure and the development of asthma, impacts of goods movement to respiratory illness, socioeconomic influences on respiratory disease, a global initiative for asthma, and the global warming connection. You will also hear inspiring stories from asthma sufferers who have achieved success in the face of adversity.

Hotel Reservations
Rooms have been blocked for attendees at the conference site, the Disneyland® Hotel in Anaheim, California, USA.  Reservations must be made directly by each attendee. You must mention that you will be attending the conference to get the special room rate of $179 per night (single, double occupancy), or $194 for triple occupancy and $209 for quadruple occupancy, plus a $10-per day resort fee. The Asthma Is a Small World Conference will be held at the Disneyland® Hotel located in the heart of the Disneyland® Resort in Anaheim, California, USA. Jackie Joyner-Kersee
Olympic Gold Medalist, Author, Entrepreneur and Asthma Sufferer
Jackie Joyner-Kersee is considered one of the greatest athletes of all time. Sports Illustrated for Women voted Jackie Female Athlete of the 20th Century and ESPN named her one of the 50 Greatest Athletes.  The author of two books, A Woman’s Place is Everywhere and her autobiography, A Kind of Grace, Jackie is continuously working to involve more corporations, sponsors and community groups in advancing the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation’s programs and initiatives worldwide.

Via Video - “Federal Legislation and the Future of Air Quality”
A forceful advocate for families, children, consumers, the environment, and her State of California, Barbara Boxer became a United States Senator in January 1993 after 10 years of service in the House of Representatives. A national leader on environmental protection, Senator Boxer is the first woman to Chair the U.S. Senate’s Committee on Environment and Public Works (EPW). On the Committee, she advocates forcefully for clean air and water, with a particular focus on the fight against global warming.

"Impacts of AB 32: Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006"

Speaker Fabian Núñez (D- 46th District) was elected to the California State Assembly in 2002 and sworn in as the State's 66th  Speaker on February 9, 2004.  The Speaker worked to pass first-in-the-nation legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from California industries.

Dr. Isabella Annesi-Maesano is currently Director of the Department of Epidemiology of Allergic and Respiratory Diseases.  As head of the department, she has conducted several epidemiological surveys: French ISAAC, EDEN Birth Cohort Study, Health Effects of School Environment Study (HESE) of DG-SANCO, Perception of Polluted Air and Respiratory Health (PEPA) Study in the frame of the W.H.O.’s Housing and health survey.

Ralph Delfino, M.D., Ph.D., University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine
Ralph Delfino is an Associate Professor in Epidemiology at the University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine.  His epidemiologic studies focus on the effects of well-characterized air pollution exposures on respiratory and cardiovascular outcomes in susceptible populations.

David Diaz-Sanchez,  Ph.D., University of California, Los Angeles, School of Medicine
Dr. David Diaz-Sanchez is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. His main area of focus has been on how air pollution can both induce and exacerbate allergies and asthma. His work has used diesel exhaust particles and environmental tobacco smoke as model particulate pollutants.

Rocio Alatorre Eden-Wynter, M. en C., Comisionada de Evidencia y Manejo de Riesgos (COFEPRIS), México
Dr. Eden-Wynter is the Commissioner of Risk Assessment and Risk Management at The Federal Commission for Sanitary Risk Protection (COFEPRIS), at the Ministry of Health.

Peyton A. Eggleston, M.D., Professor of Pediatrics, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland
Dr. Eggleston is Professor of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine and of Environmental Health Sciences in the School of Public Health.  His research interest has been in the area of the contribution of IgE-mediated inflammation to chronic asthma and the characterization of home environmental allergens and their relation to acute and chronic airway disease.

Paul English, Ph.D., MPH, California Department of Health Services
Paul English is Branch Scientific Advisor for the Environmental Health Investigations Branch at the California Department of Health Services (CDHS).  His epidemiological research has been focused on spatial epidemiology, environmental health issues at the U.S./Mexico border, and environmental links to adverse reproductive outcomes and asthma; in particular, exposures to traffic pollution.

The Baroness Finlay of Llandaff
Chair, Science and Technology Sub-Committee, House of Lords, Parliament, United Kingdom
The Baroness Finlay of Llandaff is a palliative medicine physician, working in Velindre oncology centre in Cardiff.  In 2001, she was appointed as an Independent (Crossbench) Member of the House of Lords; where she chairs the Select Committee on Science and Technology current enquiry into allergy.

Erwin W. Gelfand, M.D., Chairman, Department of Pediatrics, National Jewish Medical and Research Center, Denver, Colorado
Erwin W. Gelfand, M.D. is Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the National Jewish Medical and Research Center in Denver.  His clinical interests include the treatment of immunodeficiency diseases.  His research interests include signal transduction in lymphocytes and mast cells, a murine model of asthma and immunodeficiency diseases.

Paul Knepprath, Vice President, Government Relations, American Lung Association of California
Paul Knepprath is the Vice President of Government Relations for the American Lung Association of California where he manages the organization’s statewide public policy program.  He has organized local communities to pass numerous tobacco control ordinances and has been a leader in protecting California’s smoke-free workplaces law against attacks by the tobacco industry.

Dr. Levana Kordova-Biezuner, Scientific Director, National Air Monitoring Network, Air Quality Division, Ministry of Environmental Protection, State of Israel
Dr. Kordova–Biezuner has served as the Scientific Director of the Israeli Air Monitoring Network in the Air Quality Division of the Ministry of Environmental Protection since 2001. She provides consultation services to the Environmental Protection Ministry on air pollution and meteorology, with a focus on Air Dispersion Models for research and licensing purposes.

Lata Kumar, M.D., Professor and former Chair, Department of Pediatrics and head of Pediatric Allergy Immunology, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India
Dr. Kumar is a Senior World Health Organization (W.H.O.) Fellowship in Respiratory Diseases including Asthma National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, Bethesda, Maryland, and Environment Research Laboratory – New Orleans.  She served as the President of Indian College of Allergy, Asthma and Applied Immunology 2002 to 2004.

Nino Künzli, M.D., Ph.D., ICREA Research Professor, Institut Municipal d’Investigació Mèdica, Barcelona, Spain
Nino Künzli is a Research Professor of the Institució Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avançats (ICREA) at the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL), Institut Municipal d’Investigació Mèdica (IMIM) in Barcelona, Spain.  His research focus is environmental epidemiology with an emphasis on air pollution epidemiology, including exposure and risk assessment.

Sow-Hsong Kuo, M.D., Professor Emeritus, Department of Laboratory Medicine, College of Medicine, National Taiwan University
Dr. Kuo is a Professor Emeritus, Department of Laboratory Medicine, College of Medicine at the National Taiwan University.  He is also an adjunct attending physician, internal medicine and laboratory medicine, NTUH consultant physician, Department of Medicine, Far Eastern Memorial Hospital.

Anne Kelsey Lamb, MPH, Director, Regional Asthma Management & Prevention (RAMP) Initiative / Statewide Coordinator of Community Action to Fight Asthma (CAFA)
Anne Kelsey Lamb, MPH, is the Director of the Regional Asthma Management & Prevention (RAMP) Initiative, a project of the Public Health Institute. As Director of RAMP, Anne leads efforts to reduce the burden of asthma in the Bay Area and also coordinates a statewide initiative, Community Action to Fight Asthma.

Mr. Lus has worked at the Air Pollution Control Service of the Ministry of Environment and Housing of the Government of Catalonia, where he has been the acting manager of the industrial air emissions control service.

Wayne Nastri, Regional Administrator for U.S. EPA Region 9, has led the Region in meeting the west's environmental challenges, especially in improving air quality and protecting scarce water resources throughout the arid west.

Jonah, now 11, is a clean air champ!  Jonah has received numerous awards and achievements in the area of our environment and air quality, including a Clean Air Recognition Award in 2005 from the American Lung Association and the Prestigious Clean Air Award in 2006 from the AQMD.

Michael Schatz, M.D., M.S., Chief, Department of Allergy, Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, San Diego, California / Past President, American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology
Dr. Schatz has been a Staff Allergist at Kaiser-Permanente Medical Center in San Diego since 1977, where he currently serves as Chief of the Allergy Department.  His main current research interests are patient-centered asthma outcomes, risk stratification for asthma population management, the burden of rhinitis, and the interrelationships of asthma and pregnancy.

Dr. Smita Shah is a community physician based in Sydney, Australia, where she is the Director of Primary Health Care Education and Research Unit at Westmead Hospital.  Dr Shah’s research has been in development and evaluation of evidence based health promotion programs for schools and the community.

Dr. Wallerstein has served as AQMD's executive officer since November 1998. He holds a doctorate in environmental science & engineering from UCLA and has two decades of experience in urban planning, with emphasis on carrying out benchmark regional policies to prevent and control air pollution harmful to public health

Michelle Wilhelm, Ph.D., University of California, Los Angeles, School of Public Health
Michelle Wilhelm, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor In Residence in the Department of Epidemiology, UCLA School of Public Health. Her primary research interests are the impacts of air pollution exposure on fetal development and child health.
