On October 1, 2004, the Board approved the
Environmental Justice 2004-05 Workplan. The 13 elements build upon the
AQMD's experience and the needs of the community. They serve as the basis
for continued outreach and problem-solving activities concerning future
environmental justice issues.
The following is a brief description of the approved
initiatives for 2004-05:
Category I:
Further-Reduced Health Risks
I-1 Prepare a school site guidance document, which will the Office of
Environmental Health Hazard Assessment and other statewide efforts, and
conduct outreach to area public and private school districts
I-2 Include emission data on the AQMD website for the
AB2588 program
I-3 Continue to support the
Community Health
Air Pollution Information System (CHAPIS) by providing the latest
available information
Category II: Greater Community Access &
Involvement
II-1 Provide Smoke School Training for community residents
II-2 Provide permit information on the AQMD website
II-3 Web cast AQMD meetings, beginning with the monthly
Governing Board meetings
II-4 Create an Air Quality Institute to address the environmental
justice education needs of newly elected or appointed officials
II-5 Develop an Environmental Justice electronic “Action Alert” system
that provides information on air quality issues to interested parties,
including Clean Air Congress
members, on a regular basis
II-6 Conduct a series of community briefings on the
Multiple Air Toxics Exposure Study
III (MATES III) at several site locations to provide area residents with
information on the sampling that will be done and explanation of the
monitoring results

Provide online air quality training and informational classes

Reinstate the Environmental Justice Advisory Group

Improve the public’s opportunities to participate in permit decisions
II-10 Prepare an annual summary of AQMD’s Environmental Justice program
efforts and proposed enhancements
