Approves Funds for Air Filtration in Schools
AQMD has awarded $1.125 million to provide high-efficiency air
filtration devices at schools impacted by
industrial emissions in the Wilmington area. Preliminary results from
a pilot study showed that certain low-cost filters were
effective in reducing fine particles in indoor classroom air.

Fines
to be Imposed on Commercial Truck Drivers Caught Idling

Starting this week, commercial diesel truck drivers caught
idling for more than five minutes will be subject to a minimum
$300 fine. California Air Resources Board staff will be on
the lookout for infractions. Each year, there are 2,000
premature deaths, thousands of hospital admissions and lost
workdays statewide due to harmful diesel emissions.

Clean Air Award Winners Honored
The 2008
Clean Air Award winners were honored by AQMD at a ceremony held at
the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
Recipients were recognized for their leadership and achievements
in technology, transportation, community, public education and
environmental stewardship initiatives.

AQMD Launches Incentive Program for Clean, Natural-Gas Fireplace Logs
Southland residents can get a $125 discount at participating
dealers on the purchase and installation of a gas-log set for
their fireplace. All residents in AQMD's four-county
jurisdiction are eligible for the incentive. The program
is part of AQMD’s Healthy Hearths initiative, which aims to reduce harmful
pollution from residential wood burning. |

Southland
Air Toxics Study Shows Overall Decrease in
Cancer Risk
A multi-year study on toxic air pollution in the Southland shows
an overall 8 percent decrease in cancer risk from air pollution
but increases in some areas of the region.
