Permit Application Process Significantly Improved by Reduction in Backlog and Automation

The South Coast AQMD has recently undertaken efforts to dramatically reduce permit approval times. Businesses that operate any piece of equipment that emits or controls air pollutants are required to obtain a permit to ensure that emissions are minimized.

Over the past three years, the South Coast AQMD has cut its backlog of permit applications waiting to be processed in half.

The backlog was reduced due to the implementation of more efficient processes such as improved training and operational efficiency improvements. Using South Coast AQMD’s new online permitting system, dry cleaners, service stations, and automotive spray booths applicants can now electronically apply for and obtain a valid Permit to Operate. Applications can be completed in as little as 45 minutes, compared to the several weeks or months under the conventional application filing process. In addition, for the first time ever, companies can now register small boilers, negative air machines, and other low-emitting equipment using South Coast AQMD’s new online system.
