LAUSD Deploys First Electric School Bus

Replaces Older Higher-Emitting Model Transporting Students

LAUSD-1st Electric BusJust in time for back to school, an all-electric StarCraft e-Quest XL, Type C school bus was delivered to the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). This is one of two zero-emission buses joining the LAUSD’s fleet of school buses as part of the South Coast AQMD’s Lower Emission School Bus Program. This bus has a range of up to 90 miles on a single charge while transporting up to 48 passengers.

The zero-emission bus was on display at a media event at the Gardena Bus Depot in August. Since 2001, South Coast AQMD has awarded nearly $280 million in state and local funds to replace highly polluting school buses and retrofit newer diesel buses with particulate traps. Over 50 percent of these funds have been awarded to school districts in environmental justice communities that have been disproportionately impacted by poverty, as well as particulate and air toxics exposure.

This is LAUSD’s first electric school bus and one of 33 zero-emission all-electric school buses that have been or will be delivered to schools in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties
