SMOG PAGER SERVICE ANNOUNCED

Following a successful pilot program last year, three pager firms are planning to offer air quality forecasts and current air quality levels this summer via alphanumeric pager.

Outspoken Industries, PageNet and TSR Wireless will receive air quality data from AQMD and transmit it to customers who order the service. Users must have a pager, cell phone or other wireless communication device with an e-mail address and the capability of displaying a message. In addition to a basic monthly service charge, the firms may charge an additional nominal fee for the smog pages.

Smog pager subscribers receive AQMD's air quality forecast each morning informing them of predicted smog levels for the following day, using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's new Air Quality Index (AQI). The national index rates air quality on a scale of 0 to 500, from good to hazardous.

In addition, pager service subscribers receive instantaneous pages throughout the day whenever smog levels exceed a set level, such as AQI 101, designated Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.

More than 70 individuals participated in an AQMD pilot program last year including parents of children with asthma, school physical education teachers and coaches, doctors and athletes.
