To Represent Cities
of Western Los Angeles County
Los Angeles Councilwoman
Jan Perry, who represents the Ninth District communities of Los Angeles, was
sworn in today as the newest member of the South Coast Air Quality Management
District Board.
Perry will represent the
25 cities located in the western portion of Los Angeles County on the AQMD
Board. She was selected by mayors and council members of those cities.
“I’m honored to have been
chosen to represent my peers on the AQMD Board,” said Perry. “AQMD has an
important mission and I look forward to my role in the effort to clean up the
air in this region”.
In addition to a
demonstrated interest in air quality, AQMD Board members have an understanding
of the air pollution problems facing the general public.
As the current chair of
the Los Angeles City Environmental Management Committee, Perry has consistently
demonstrated her commitment to better air quality for her constituents and has
vigorously pursued environmental justice for all residents.
Perry has spearheaded a
number of important projects ranging from increasing available green space in
urban communities to developing outdoor classrooms where parents and children
could learn about California’s environment to preserving the historic culture of
Los Angeles.
Before joining the Los
Angeles city council in 1991, Perry served as Chief of Staff for the district
she now represents. She was appointed in 1998 by then-mayor Richard
Riordan as executive director of the Census 2000 Outreach Project for the City
of Los Angeles.
Perry earned her
undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Southern California.
AQMD Board members serve
four-year terms. Perry will fill the unexpired term of former Los Angeles
Councilman Hal Bernson, which ends in January 2006.
AQMD is the air pollution
control agency for Orange County and major portions of Los Angeles, San
Bernardino and Riverside counties.
