AQMD TO HOST CONFERENCE ON THE PRECAUTIONARY PRINCIPLE

Aug. 19, 2003

The South Coast Air Quality Management District will host a free conference at its Diamond Bar headquarters on Thursday on an emerging trend in environmental protection known as the “precautionary principle.”

The precautionary principle is defined as taking precautionary measures, even if some cause-and-effect relationships are not fully established scientifically, when an activity raises threats of harm to human health or the environment.

The conference, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in AQMD’s auditorium at 21865 Copley Dr. in Diamond Bar, seeks to include scientists, physicians, researchers, educators, environmentalists, business leaders, government officials, public health experts, attorneys, and consultants with knowledge or interest of the precautionary principle.

Speakers at the conference include experts from environmental organizations, industry groups, government agencies, and universities presenting the most recent scientific research findings and case studies, placing an emphasis on air quality and topics relevant to Southern California in a format that encourages an exchange of ideas between presenters and participants.

Those interested can find a detailed conference agenda on the AQMD’s website at www.aqmd.gov, under the “meetings and workshops” section.  A continental breakfast, lunch, and other refreshments will be served.  There is no charge for the conference, however participants are encouraged to RSVP promptly, as seating is limited and pre-registration is required.

To register, call Rainbow Yeung at (909) 396-3373 or send an email to ryeung@aqmd.gov.

AQMD is the air pollution control agency for Orange County and major portions of Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
