Los Angeles – Los Angeles City Councilmember Jan Perry, also a member of
the South Coast Air Quality Management District, announced today that AQMD
will display Clean Air Choice vehicles at the 9th annual Central Avenue Jazz
Festival.
The festival is scheduled for July 31 and August 1 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
on the 4200 block of Central Avenue. Working with auto dealerships in
Councilmember Perry’s district, AQMD will showcase affordable air-friendly
vehicles, along with a working, zero-emissions Honda fuel cell vehicle
representing the future of Clean Air Choice cars.
Plans for AQMD’s participation in the Central Avenue Jazz Festival were
announced at a news conference following a jazz parade comprised of the Jazz
Ensemble from George Washington Preparatory High School, the Original LaLa
(Louisiana to Los Angeles) Second-Line Dancers and the cast of “North on
South Central Avenue” representing the Theater Perception Consortium.
“Some 25,000 Southern Californians are expected to congregate for the 9th
annual Central Avenue Jazz Festival,” Perry said. “Not only will they hear
two full days of cool jazz in the heat of summer, they will have an
opportunity to assume personal responsibility for air quality through this
Clean Air Choice program and others offered by AQMD.”
The AQMD booth at the Festival will be staffed by air quality
professionals prepared to address the concerns of the local community and
provide information designed to empower consumers in the fight for cleaner
air.
Passenger vehicles are the largest single source of air pollution in
Southern California. They are responsible for 25 percent of smog-forming
emissions. The vehicles on display at the Festival produce significantly
less emissions than the average new car, truck or mini-van. Literature
available at the Festival will direct consumers to the complete list of
air-friendly vehicles available at
www.cleanairchoices.org.
The 9th annual Central Avenue Jazz Festival will offer two full days of
free family fun. The Festival will feature live performances, food and
merchandise vendors. This year’s Festival artwork, created by artist Andy
Rios, will be available on posters and t-shirts. Among those scheduled at
appear are a number of L.A.-based jazz performers with international
reputations including Barbara Morrison, Ernie Andrews and Gerald Wilson.
Festival information is available by calling (323) 234-7882.
Perry concluded, “Live jazz and community pride are traditions here in
South Los Angeles. AQMD’s presence at the Central Avenue Jazz Festival will
honor both traditions.”
AQMD is the air pollution control agency for Orange County and major
portions of Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
