Wildfire Creates Unhealthful Air Quality

August 30, 2006

In areas of San Bernardino County

Smoke from the Emerald wildfire is forecast to create unhealthful air quality conditions today and tomorrow in mountain and valley areas of San Bernardino County.

All individuals are urged to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities in the smoke-impacted areas.

Air quality is predicted to exceed 100 on the Air Quality Index (AQI) today and tomorrow in the following areas due to particulate matter (known as PM10 and PM2.5) in wildfire smoke:

In addition to the areas listed above, portions of the Inland Empire and the Santa Clarita Valley are forecast to have unhealthful air quality today and tomorrow due to ground-level ozone concentrations.

What To Do When Air Pollution Reaches Unhealthy Levels

In areas with UNHEALTHY-SENSITIVE (AQI of 101 to 150) air quality, sensitive or susceptible persons, such as those with heart or lung disease, should minimize outdoor activity.

For more tips on avoiding health impacts from the smoke, see http://www.aqmd.gov/pubinfo/factsheets.htm on AQMD’s website.

AQMD is the air pollution control agency for Orange County and major portions of Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
