Coast Air Quality Management District’s Governing Board today re-elected
William A. Burke, Ed.D., to his fifth term as chairman of the agency’s
board. Riverside County Supervisor Roy Wilson was re-elected vice-chairman.
Burke was first appointed to the AQMD Board in September 1993. Under
Burke’s leadership, AQMD has adopted many groundbreaking programs, including
AQMD’s Environmental Justice Initiatives and most recently the 2007 Mobile
Source Fair Share Initiative to secure greater local authority to regulate
mobile sources of air pollution.
Riverside County Supervisor Roy Wilson is one of the longest-serving
members on the AQMD Governing Board. He joined the Board in 1988 and has
served as vice-chair since January 2003.
Burke and Wilson will both serve a two-year leadership term.
In other action today, the Board:
- Awarded more than $1 million to retrofit 57 existing diesel school
buses in the Bassett Unified School District and the Coachella Valley
Unified School District with control devices to reduce particulate matter
emissions. Since 2000, AQMD has awarded $20.1 million in state and local
funding to retrofit 2,610 diesel school buses with emission control
devices.
AQMD is the air pollution control agency for Orange County and major
portions of Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
