William Burke Re-elected Chair to AQMD Board; Roy Wilson Re-elected Vice-Chair

Nov. 2, 2007

The South Coast Air Quality Management District’s Governing Board today re-elected William A. Burke, Ed.D., to his fifth term as chairman of the agency’s board.  Riverside County Supervisor Roy Wilson was re-elected vice-chairman.

Burke was first appointed to the AQMD Board in September 1993.  Under Burke’s leadership, AQMD has adopted many groundbreaking programs, including AQMD’s Environmental Justice Initiatives and most recently the 2007 Mobile Source Fair Share Initiative to secure greater local authority to regulate mobile sources of air pollution.

Riverside County Supervisor Roy Wilson is one of the longest-serving members on the AQMD Governing Board.  He joined the Board in 1988 and has served as vice-chair since January 2003.

Burke and Wilson will both serve a two-year leadership term.

In other action today, the Board:

  • Awarded more than $1 million to retrofit 57 existing diesel school buses in the Bassett Unified School District and the Coachella Valley Unified School District with control devices to reduce particulate matter emissions.  Since 2000, AQMD has awarded $20.1 million in state and local funding to retrofit 2,610 diesel school buses with emission control devices.

AQMD is the air pollution control agency for Orange County and major portions of Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
