AQMD Reopens Registration for Popular
Lawn Mower Exchange Program

Apr. 4, 2008

750 Additional Mowers to be Exchanged

WHAT: Responding to record demand, AQMD today added 750 mowers to its popular “Mow Down Air Pollution” program and reopened registration today for seven exchange events across the Southland.  Registration had closed last week after the program sold 4,000 mowers.  Residents now have one more opportunity to register to exchange a working gas-powered mower for a new electric mower, valued at $399, for just $100.  Pre-registration is required (see below).  The exchange events will take place on seven Saturdays from approximately 8 a.m. to 12 noon starting tomorrow at the following locations:

WHEN &

WHERE:

April 5 City Hall, 3200 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way, Palm Springs
April 19 Veteran’s Memorial Stadium, 5000 E. Lew Davis St., Long Beach
April 26 Anaheim Stadium, 2000 Gene Autry Way, Anaheim
May 3 Rose Bowl Stadium, 1001 Rose Bowl Dr., Pasadena
May 10 Epicenter Stadium, 8408 Rochester Ave., Rancho Cucamonga
May 17 Hollywood Park Race Track, 1050 South Prairie Ave., Inglewood
May 31 California Baptist University, 8432 Magnolia Ave., Riverside

HOW TO REGISTER:  Residents can visit http://www.aqmd.gov/tao/lawnmower.html or call 888-425-6247. Telephone information is available in English and Spanish.

WHY: One typical gas-powered lawn mower pollutes as much in one year as 43 new cars driven for one year.  By June, AQMD will have exchanged nearly 25,000 gasoline mowers for zero-emission electric mowers and reduced about 121 tons of smog-forming pollution since the program began in 2003.
