| Apr. 29, 2008 Air quality officials
have issued another smoke advisory today for portions of the San Gabriel
Valley, San Bernardino Valley and San Bernardino Mountains due to smoke from
the Sierra Madre wildfire.
All individuals are urged to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary
outdoor activities in the area directly impacted by smoke. This includes
any area where residents can see or smell smoke.
Air quality may reach the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups level or higher
today in areas most impacted by smoke, including the east San Gabriel
Valley, the Pomona/Walnut Valley, the western San Bernardino Valley and the
eastern San Bernardino Mountains.
Wildfires generate smoke containing numerous air pollutants including
fine particulates known as PM10 and PM2.5.
What to Do When Air Pollution Reaches Unhealthy Levels
In areas with air quality that is UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS,
sensitive or susceptible persons, such as those with heart or lung disease,
should minimize outdoor activity.
In areas with UNHEALTHY air quality, everyone should discontinue
prolonged, vigorous outdoor exercise lasting longer than one hour. Examples
of the kinds of outdoor activities that should be avoided are calisthenics,
basketball, running, soccer, football, tennis, swimming laps, and water
polo. Susceptible persons, such as those with heart or lung disease, should
avoid outdoor activity entirely.

AQMD is the air pollution control agency for Orange County and major
portions of Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
