SMOKE ADVISORY

Valid Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Air quality has improved significantly across the South Coast Air Basin with greater control of the wildfires and favorable weather conditions.  The fire agencies have reported that the Freeway Complex fire is now 100% contained with no active burning.  The Sayre Fire in north San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys is reported to be 85% contained with some interior burning within the fire perimeter.  All measurements throughout the South Coast Air Basin are currently in the Moderate range or better.

Unhealthy air quality may still be experienced locally close to active burning where smoke occurs, that is, in locations where residents can see and smell smoke.  These areas are most likely to be in portions of the Santa Clarita Valley (Forecast Area 13), the San Fernando Valley (Areas 6 and 7), and the San Gabriel Mountains (Area 15) that are directly impacted by smoke.

In areas directly impacted by smoke:  All individuals are urged to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.  Everyone should avoid any vigorous outdoor or indoor exertion; people with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly, and children should remain indoors.  Keep your windows and doors closed unless it is extremely hot inside.  In these cases, seek alternate shelter.  Run your air conditioner if you have one.  Keep the fresh air intake closed and the filter clean to prevent bringing additional smoke inside.
