The South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) has scheduled a series of public workshops to discuss the draft Multiple Air Toxics Exposure Study III. MATES III is a monitoring and evaluation study conducted in the South Coast Air Basin (Basin). The study is a follow on to previous air toxics studies in the Basin and is part of the AQMD Governing Board Environmental Justice Initiative.  The study includes a monitoring program at several sites in Southern California, and a computer modeling effort to characterize risk from air toxics across the Basin. The study focuses on the carcinogenic risk from exposure to air toxics. It does not estimate mortality or other health effects from particulate exposures or other criteria pollutants.  A network of ten fixed sites was used to monitor toxic air contaminants once every three days for two years.

The results of the study indicate that the overall average lifetime risk from toxic air contaminants in the Basin is about 1,200 per million.  Staff will present an overview of the findings, and is seeking input and comments of the study.

A draft report of the Study was released on January 4, 2008 for a 90-day public review and comment period ending April 4, 2008. Send any comments on the MATES III draft report to:
