In 1994, the South Coast Air Basin (Basin) exceeded state and federal ambient air quality standards for ozone, PM10 (particulate matter), and carbon monoxide in some or all areas. The state sulfate standard was exceeded in some Basin areas. The state lead standard was exceeded in one localized area immediately adjacent to a source. No areas of the Basin exceeded standards for nitrogen dioxide or sulfur dioxide.
The Los Angeles and Riverside County areas of the Southeast Desert Air Basin (SEDAB) served by the District exceeded standards for ozone and PM10. No other standards were exceeded in the District SEDAB areas.
The maximum concentrations and the number of exceedances in all areas of the District are given in the following tables:
For a graphical comparison of 1994 maxima to those for 1991-1993, see "Maximum Pollutant Concentrations, 94 vs 91-93". For those pollutants which exceeded the federal standards in 1994, the following isopleth maps show the geographical variation in number of exceedances:
Air quality in the District has improved over the last decade. For information on trends through 1994, read further "Air Quality Trends through 1994".
