The following information presents results of air sampling conducted by the
AQMD on June 1, 2008 in response to a request from the Los Angeles County
Fire Department for sampling and analysis.
Instantaneous or grab air samples were collected upwind, downwind and within
200 yards of the fire, listed in the table as the “Hot Zone”. Upwind and
downwind samples did not show any elevated levels of air pollutants,
including toxic air contaminants. Air samples collected in the “Hot Zone”
downwind of the fire had elevated levels of air pollutants including some
toxic air contaminants. At this location, the total carbon concentration - a
gauge of gaseous toxic concentrations – of the most concentrated sample was
about 2,300 parts per billion (ppb). The typical range of total carbon
concentration in the Los Angeles Basin is 100 ppb to 700 ppb. Benzene, a
toxic air contaminant, was measured at about 18 ppb near the fire; its
normal concentration is up to 3 ppb.
- Laboratory Report of Samples Collected Upwind, Downwind, and in the
Hot Zone (200 yards downwind of the fire) between 4 and 5 p.m., June 1,
2008.
- Laboratory Report of Additional Downwind Sample Collected at 7:17
p.m., June 1, 2008.
-
Laboratory Report of Downwind Samples Collected
1 Day After the Fire
on June 2, 2008.
