In Memoriam: Dennis Hansberger

South Coast AQMD mourns the loss of former Governing Board member Dennis Hansberger, of Redlands, who passed away in May at the age of 78. Hansberger was a member of the Board from 1977 to 1980. He served as the representative for the County of San Bernardino.

As a founding member of the Governing Board, Hansberger served at a time when there were more than 100 Stage 1 smog alerts each year. The programs and regulations the Board has enacted have proven effective, as there hasn’t been a Stage 1 episode since 2003.

In other leadership roles, Hansberger served on the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors from 1972 to 1980, and again from 1996 to 2008, where he served two terms as Chairman of the Board of Supervisors. Additionally, he served as President of the Southern California Association of Governments and chaired the IEHP Board of Directors where he fought for quality healthcare for the underserved. He also created a consulting firm specializing in land-use planning, public policy, and mining and mineral resources.
