Replace Your Ride Program Helps Residents Buy Less-Polluting Vehicles or Get Transportation Vouchers

replace-your-ride-seal-logoSince 2015, the South Coast AQMD has administered the Replace Your Ride Program - aimed at replacing older vehicles with cleaner and zero emission vehicles. The program is funded in part by the California Climate Investments, a statewide initiative putting cap-and-trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Under the program, eligible participants can receive up to $9,500 for scrapping an older vehicle and replacing it with the cleanest advanced technology vehicle. The program also offers an incentive of up to $2,000 towards the purchase and installation of a vehicle charger if the participants purchased a Plug-in Hybrid or Battery Electric Vehicle through the program. Instead of a replacement vehicle, participants can also opt for the Alternative Mobility Option, where a voucher of up to $7,500 may be used for public bus or rail transportation.

Low-income residents that live in an environmentally disadvantaged area and are purchasing a Plug-in Hybrid or Zero Emission vehicle would receive the highest incentive amount. The incentive amount is the same if the participant chooses a used vehicle, if the used vehicle is eight years old or newer. Applicants may be able to stack incentives by purchasing a new vehicle that qualifies for a rebate through the Clean Vehicle Rebate Project (CVRP).

In order to qualify for the program, participants must:

  • Reside within the South Coast AQMD’s jurisdiction,

  • Meet income requirements, and

  • Retire an eligible vehicle.

Participants can apply for free at Once applications are submitted, case managers will work closely with applicants to collect all necessary documentation and ensure eligibility. Due to the popularity and requirements of the program, the process can take up to four months to complete.
