Air Quality and Sports
SCAQMD is committed to protecting the health of all residents. This includes the residents that spend a large portion of their time outside, like many athletes. Sports require exercise, training, of different intensity and strain, and competition. All of which makes the quality of the air we breathe vital. Unhealthy air is harmful to our bodies. Its effects can impact us in numerous ways and can even result in long-term health complications. Athletes may be aware of the air quality impacts, but they may not know the risk of competing when the air is unhealthy.
As an athlete, parent, and coach, it is important that you are educated about the air quality in your community as well as the health effects that pollution can cause, especially during athletic activities. By knowing when the air is harmful, athletes, parents, and coaches can avoid certain outdoor physical activities and take preventive measures to protect themselves. SCAQMD is here to educate and spread awareness so that athletes know their risks as well as the resources needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
