250 Attendees Joined South Coast AQMD’s 9th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

On January 15, 2022 South Coast AQMD hosted its 9th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service:  “Living, Dreaming, Believing in a Clean Air Future.” Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of advocating for equality and justice for all, this year’s virtual celebration, embodied South Coast AQMD’s commitment to collaborating with local communities for clean, healthy air for all to breathe. Reducing air pollution in the South Coast region is critical because it disproportionately impacts environmental justice communities which are often located along freeways, goods movement corridors, and near industrial areas. About 250 attendees joined in virtually for this year’s celebration.

Videos from community-based organizations started the event off by sharing how the legacy of Dr. King influences their work and commitment to improving their communities. Brooke Thomas, journalist, and anchor for KTTV Good Day LA emceed the event which featured inspirational speakers and live streamed gospel music. The keynote speaker was Dr. Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D., Secretary of State of California. Also featured was the recipient of the Environmental Justice for All award, Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell. Other special guests included Reverend Mary S. Minor, Dr. Marcus Goodloe, and Gospel Vocalist Tim Kepler.
