Use of South Coast AQMD’s PM air quality data is at the user’s discretion and should be done with caution. The intent of the monitoring data is to provide members of the public with air quality information that is supplemental to the South Coast AQMD air quality monitoring regional coverage already in place. This monitor is intended to represent PM levels around the ExxonMobil facility. Measurements from this monitor alone cannot determine the relative contributions of regional or other source-specific origins to PM levels. Local conditions for pollutants can vary widely based on meteorological conditions and proximity to sources of PM.
Each monitor only measures PM2.5 or PM10, which are two of several routinely monitored “criteria” pollutants that the U.S. EPA links to human health impacts. The data provided on the website is based only on PM2.5 measured from this monitor, and differs from the Air Quality Index (AQI) calculation represented in the South Coast AQMD regional map: http://www3.aqmd.gov/webappl/gisaqi2/VEMap3D.aspx
AQI is a form of health index calculated using real-time data of all gaseous and particulate criteria pollutants combined with air quality forecast modeling, and is the best real-time indicator for regional air quality health impacts. Because the data from this monitor is used for a special study, data from this monitor will not be used in the calculation of real-time AQI.
