The AQMD has just received a grant for $750,000 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to teach citizen scientists how to properly measure the bad stuff in the air in and around their homes, neighborhoods and workplaces.
“This research will provide tools communities can use to understand air pollution in their neighborhoods and improve public health,” said Thomas Burke, science advisor and deputy assistant administrator of the EPA Office of Research and Development. Learn more  .

President Obama announces a ninth advanced manufacturing hub aimed at developing smart sensors and digital process controls to improve production efficiency. 
The Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute, headquartered in Los Angeles, will be led by the Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy.

Aclima is a San Francisco-based company that designs and deploys environmental sensor networks. Aclima is partnering with google earth outreach to map air quality data using google earth cars. Their goal is to map the world in a rich layer of environmental data.

The Safecast / IO Rodeo Air Quality sensing board uses AlphaSense air quality sensors. This open source project is still under development with more to come soon.

This community-based project demonstrates the capabilities of new real-time monitoring technology for residents and citizen scientists. Safecast is a global project working to empower people with data by mapping radiation levels and building a sensor networks. The community is allowed to contribute radiation data and freely use the data collected. The Safecast group started after March 2011 earthquake and resulting nuclear situation at Fukushima Diachi. This event established the need for more data than what was available for the general public. This group is looking at the potential of building environmental sensor networks as well.
